Just south west of Sri Lanka lie the paradise coral islands of the Maldives. With bountiful marine life, the crystal clear waters are a nirvana for scuba divers and snorkellers whilst swaying coconut palms, lush vegetation and calm turquoise lagoons are sure to captivate even the most seasoned beach lover. For many these are the perfect desert islands, albeit with a touch of luxury.
Over a thousand coral atolls and islands extend south across the equator, although of these only two hundred or so are actually inhabited. Small traditional wooden boats called ‘dhonis’ ply the calm waters back and forth between the islands while the high standard of resort accommodation coupled with idyllic surroundings promises a holiday where rest and relaxation are key.
